It's the time of year when people go on road trips, but it can be hard when gas prices are so high. Drivers who stopped at a gas station in one small South Dakota town got free fuel on Thursday. Gary Van Wettering is from Iowa and is on a motorcycle trip through parts of South Dakota. And he stopped at Cowboy Corner in Interior for gas. "Well actually we were standing here filling up our motorcycles and a perfect stranger walks up to us and asks if we know anything about this Snickers promotion and we thought that was bizarre," Van Wettering said. But he decided to check it out. "And then we walk in and pay and some guy offers us fifty bucks a piece and that was kind of a cool bizarre treat," Van Wettering said. It's all part of the Snickers promotion to see how far people will go for free fuel. Two remote gas stations were picked. At Cowboy Corner, for one day the first 200 people get a 50 dollar prepaid debit card. Sue Leach, Cowboy Corner Owner, says this has been great for business. "Never been nothing like this before so it has been kind of fun and something new," Leach said. "People from all over stopped in for the deal. Besides Iowa, people from different places including New York, North Carolina, and Georgia showed up. Van Wettering says he'll put his new debit card to use to get back home. "We are going to activate it for the trip back to Iowa and that should pretty much pay for our gas all the way back," Van Wettering said.
And he says he'll always remember his time in this small town. "My first trip to Interior, South Dakota. I'll never forget it."
The other gas station picked was in Essex, California. In total Snickers gave away $20,000 in free cash for gas.
