Rapid City Regional Hospital full for weeks

The hospital is full. For the past couple of weeks, Rapid City Regional Hospital has been operating at 85 to 90 percent full, which is very high for a hospital.  Typically, you could count on all the beds being filled in the winter, the coldest, darkest months. Not any more.

In an absolute reversal of historical trends, the summer is now the busiest time of year for Rapid City Regional, when the area hosts all the tourists.

Tim Sughrue, chief executive officer at Regional Hospital, explains the trend could mean an expansion for the facility."The board has given authorization to begin to reexamine our master facility plan and whether there is a need for additional beds at Rapid City Regional Hospital. We're particularly sensitive to semi-private room and the desire to move toward all private rooms," he said.

Sughrue says Rapid City Regional Hospital has about one hundred thousand patient stays each year, half from the immediate Rapid City area, the other half from the surrounding area, including Wyoming and Nebraska.

Admissions are increasing slightly each year.
