A six-hour standoff ended Tuesday night when the Rapid City/Pennington County Special Response Team forced their way into a home on the 900 block of Silver Street, rescuing a 2-year-old hostage and arresting the suspected hostage taker.

The suspect, Raymond Cuny, 32, of Rapid City, was arrested for second degree kidnapping, second degree burglary and two warrants. Additional charges against Cuny are pending.

The child was unharmed, and was returned to his family. Cuny did not know the people in the home and has no relationship to the child.

Rapid City Police were initially called at 4 p.m. for a burglary in progress at a residence on the 1000 block of Silver Street. The suspect fled and was seen running into the home on the 900 block of Silver Street. Several adults and children were able to get out of the home, but Cuny took the boy hostage. Initial reports indicated that Cuny had a gun.

The SRT attempted to negotiate with Cuny for several hours, but Cuny was uncooperative. During that time, nearby roads were closed and the neighborhood was locked down. Around 10:30 p.m. the SRT made their move, ending the standoff. The SRT used distraction devices and door breach rounds, but no shots were fired and no one was injured. Throughout the incident, the welfare and rescue of the child hostage was top priority, according to police..

"On behalf of the Rapid City Police Department, Pennington County Sheriff's Office, and South Dakota Highway Patrol, I am extremely proud of the Special Response Team and their heroic efforts," Police Chief Karl Jegeris said.

The Pennington County Sheriff's Office and South Dakota Highway Patrol assisted in the response.
