Rapid City Public Libraries is currently involved in a yearlong national “Geek the Library” campaign.

Sponsored by Online Computer Library Center, Inc. and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the purpose of the campaign is to find out what the public is passionate about, such as “things they geek.”

Regardless of what people “geek” the library wants the community to know that there is support for an individual’s passion. It is also the hope of the campaign to turn that passion into support for libraries and the ongoing need for awareness about library issues such as funding.

In collaboration with the Rapid City Arts Council, artist Tyler “Siamese” Read has painted an 8- by 4-foot mural in Art Alley promoting passion for art with “Igeek streetart.” Geekthelibrary.org has said that as far as they know, this is the first Geek the Library outdoor mural.
