Sheridan County boy shot in head by another child is in recovery

Two 11-year-old boys were handling a gun while playing on 4-wheeler when it went off, striking one of the boys in the head.

The shooting happened outside of the child's home near State Highway 345 outside of Sheridan Thursday afternoon, and was reported to the police around 6 p.m.

The boys friend, owned the .22 caliber gun. The bullet went through his skin but stopped before going through his skull.

He was immediately taken to Sheridan Memorial Hospital, where a doctor determined he needed to be life-flighted to Billings Clinic Hospital. He has a successful surgery that night.

Sheridan County Sheriff Dave Hofmeier says that the incident is most likely an accident.

"They were on a 4-wheeler, side by side 4-wheeler and we believe that the gun accidentally discharged. Whether it was dropped or what happened, that's still in question at this time," said Hofmeier.

The boy is in stable condition and will be released from the hospital Friday evening.

Sheridan police are looking into the accessibility of the firearm and plan to interview the boy who shot his friend. The case is still under investigation.  If the shooting is proven accidental then charges will not be filed.
