It's been a long process, but the plan for the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center expansion project is in its final stages. On Thursday, the design team presented their preferred concept to the public. People could then give their input.
There were three concepts being looked at and the one the team went with is called the blue concept. A new contemporary arena would be placed just west of the existing Don Barnett Arena, they then will remodel the existing Don Barnett, and transform this new arena into a full stadium.
"This concept deals in a very unique way with the existing problems of Don Barnett Arena. It basically comes in and carves out those issues, basically takes all the interior out of them the seating problems, the code issues, and allows a new arena to transform into a stadium sized facility," said Donovan Broberg, of Arc International.
"It is unique there is nothing like it in the state, nothing like it in the region, basically a small concert venue from 4,000 seats up to 19,000 seats," said Stacey Jones, of Crawford Architects.
The total cost of the project would be around $175 million. The design team will present their concept on July 7 to the Rapid City Council.
