A real Black Hills artifact is on display in KOTA Territory. After having a replica for several years a museum now has the real deal, one of the largest gold nuggets ever found.
The Adams Museum in Deadwood put the authentic Potato Creek Johnny nugget on permanent display Thursday. The gold nugget is one of the most well-known artifacts in the Black Hills. Previously it was in a bank safe while a replica was in its place, but it has now been moved to the museum for the public to fully enjoy.
Employees at the museum are excited because of the attention it will be bring. "As an exhibits curator, my job is to attract people to stop and look at something and be interested, and when that happens it feels really good," exhibit curator Darrel Nelson said.
When asked what the nugget is worth, nobody was certain, but as an artifact of Deadwood history, it is said to be priceless.
