Republicans rally behind Rounds; State GOP Convention

All roads to a Republican U.S. Senate majority go through South Dakota.

That's according to multiple Republican leaders at the State GOP Convention Friday. Five Republican candidates ran for the U.S. Senate seat in the primary election. Former Governor Mike Rounds came out on top.

Now Craig Lawrence, South Dakota Republican Party co-chairman, says it's time to rally behind Rounds.

Lawrence says if Rounds wins the senate seat, that will give Republicans the senate majority. "Well the voters said that’s who they wanted, so we’re rallying behind Mike to say, ‘Let’s go!'" said Lawrence.

One such Republican showing party unification is Larry Rhoden, former U.S. Senate hopeful. In a surprise speech at the convention, Rhoden endorsed Rounds as a great leader for our state. "He is a good choice for our next senator," said Rhoden. "He has the core values that we all share as republicans, and he’s demonstrated his ability and his respect for the process."

The convention runs Friday and Saturday. Delegates will nominate candidates for positions like Secretary of State and Attorney General Saturday.
