Movie opening special for Black Hills family

The opening of a new movie is a time for families to get together. But the opening of one particular film is special for one Black Hills family.

The movie, "The Fault in Our Stars," in now playing in Rapid City. It's based on the life of Rapid City resident Esther Earl, her struggle with cancer and the love she found during her battle.

Family members gathered at the Olive Garden in Rushmore Mall for dinner on Sunday before heading over to the theater. Esther's uncle, Cal Earl, said the film can be an inspiration to many people.

"I think it shows hope for anyone struggling with cancer. It doesn't matter whether they're adolescent or adult. I think it's an inspiration to all of us," Earl said. "All of us can learn even if we're not struggling with cancer. It's very inspirational."

The family has started a foundation in Esther’s honor called, "This Star Won't Go Out," to help families deal with cancer.
