Petition drive started to save DC Booth Fish Hatchery

A petition has been started to help save the nations oldest fish hatchery from closing.

Signatures are now being gathered for an online petition in support of keeping the DC Booth Fish Hatchery in Spearfish open.

Rumors have swirled since last August when it was announced that the hatchery may be closing. Members of the US Fish and Wildlife Service toured the facility June 10th and 11th to assess the feasibility of moving part of the 175,000 item archive to West Virginia.

The non-profit Booth Society fears that the removal of those archives will effectively spell the end for the fishery.

Acting Regional Director for the agency Larry Gamble, says that they are simply looking to reduce costs to prevent closing.
