Boulder removed from Needles Highway

Many tourists flock to the Black Hills during the summer months. Earlier this week a boulder fell in the middle of Needles Highway. Those visiting say this does not deter them from seeing the sights.
DOT officials say they received a call about this boulder on Monday morning. It was removed shortly afterwards. The boulder fell right in front of a falling rock warning sign on Highway 87 near Hill City.

Tourists say the views from needles highway are breath taking, and they don't worry too much about falling rocks.
"We've been traveling for a long time and we've never seen a rock fall. But you always look up and you kind of hold your breath as you go around that corner," said rene White, a tourist from Texas.
DOT officials estimate the boulder was about four feet high and three feet wide. They also say the last time a big boulder fell in that area was about 20 years ago.
