South Dakota's U.S. Senator John Thune said Wednesday that he is working hard to convince people about the merits of the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery in Spearfish.
In a satellite interview, he said the community has been a great partner in supporting the attraction, and most of the funding is actually independent of federal dollars. Thune said a lot of private money helps the hatchery, and the great public/private partnership should continue.
"I've spoken directly with the folks who are going to be tasked with making final decisions about this and convey to them the importance of the fish hatchery what it means to the community, what it means to the region and what a great partnership it is," said Thune.
Last summer a letter writing campaign and petition drive to save the hatchery resulted in more than 47,000 signatures and more than 6,000 letters to service officials.
