Belle Fourche Development Corp. partners with Neighborworks to 'Paint the Town'

By Barrett Phillips

Two organizations have banded together to 'Paint the Town' in Belle Fourche, all in an effort to give back to the community.
Jim Doolittle, Belle Fourche Development Project Corporation Coordinator, said this is the first time in years Neighborworks has been in Belle Fourche.  It's the organization's goal to implement the 'Paint the Town' program to a greater degree and make it an annual event.

Neighborworks is a regional organization that helps people in need. The organization helps fund repairs and remodeling of the selected recipients home.

On Tuesday, local volunteers repainted Helen Amensen's home in appreciation for her volunteerism.

"This is all most kind of a payback deal and trying to install a greater since of volunteerism, greater since of community spirit, and having a long-term affect of improving neighborhoods," said Doolittle.

People of all ages from high school students to senior citizens volunteered in the repainting. Even Belle Fourche Mayor Gary Hendrickson got his hands dirty.

"There was about 12–15 other volunteers that scraped, primed, that sort of thing. So, its been a good project for a lot of volunteers; and we truly appreciate everybody stepping up and helping out the community," said Mayor Hendrickson.

Doolittle said if they can make this an annual event it will help to improve existing housing and build new homes.
