Rapid City Mayor names new chief of police

Posted:
A highly anticipated announcement out of city hall Monday morning: Rapid City's next police chief is named, and the Mayor's pick may surprise you.
It's current Rapid City Lieutenant Elias Diaz, a 16-year veteran of the Department.

Mayor Sam Kooiker calls him the clear choice given his wide variety of experience within the Department.  "Lieutenant Diaz has a solid track record, diverse experience and the vision necessary to lead the Department," Mayor Kooiker said.

Diaz, along with 26 other people applied for the position in a somewhat unconventional hiring process for the Department.  A five member panel interviewed potential candidates. In previous years, the outgoing chief made the nomination and it was usually okayed and confirmed with the mayor and council.   Most recently former Chief Steve Allender was grooming Assistant Chief Karl Jegeris for the position. When asked whether Diaz's appointment would create division within the Department, the new Chief told reporters that "leadership is a trust and it may or may not happen overnight."

Diaz says he's excited about this assignment and has plans for his future leadership of the Department. "Today I pledge to you the citizens of this community my tireless, unwavering efforts to promote not only public safety and not only the quality of life we all want and all deserve, but I pledge to commit continued public confidence in our Department," Diaz said.

Diaz says he plans to take a mentorship approach to leadership, and focus on cold cases and pedestrian involved traffic accidents among other things.

Diaz will assume his new duties Monday, June 16 pending confirmation by the City Council.
