Volksmarch special for one family from Illinois

The annual Crazy Horse Volksmarch is a popular destination for tourist from not only the Black Hills area, but from around the country. But for one family from Illinois, this year's hike is extra special.

For David and Cathy Asbery, the annual hike is a family tradition.

"We do it every 4 or 5 years," Asbery said.

But this year was a little different for the family from Mount Vernon, Illinois. Asbery’s father, who usually travels with his family to South Dakota, couldn't make it this year.

"He had surgery on his carotid artery and he couldn't come with us. So we're walking in his honor," Asbery said.

She says he is a big fan of the city of Custer. He loves everything about the time period and history of Custer. She also said he always loved South Dakota.

Sunday wasn't an ideal day for hiking. Steady rain beat down on the hikers throughout the day. Event organizer Lora Frane said the weather had an impact on attendance.

"If we have a couple thousand people, I think we'll be doing good," Frane said. "We had a little over 5,000 people yesterday,"

Although Asbery said she misses her dad being there, she thanks him for starting such a wonderful family tradition.

"These are things we did as children with him. And these are now things that we're doing with our children,” Cathy said.
