Delta now offering direct flights between Atlanta and Rapid City

Summer vacations are right around the corner. And if you're heading south from Rapid City, Delta Airlines is making it a little easier.

The first direct flight between Atlanta and Rapid City landed Saturday morning. The new route will allow travelers in this area easier access to the southeastern part of the country.

Rapid City Regional Airport board president Ray Carpenter said he would like Rapid City to become a greater tourist destination for flyers.

"It provides a direct flight to Atlanta. Otherwise they'd have to go through one of the other connections, like Minneapolis or Denver, to get to Atlanta. This provides another access route for people from Atlanta to come to Rapid City,” Carpenter said.

Bill and MaryAnn Hotham, of Pines Knoll Shores, North Carolina, are making their first trip to the Black Hills area. They said not only did they enjoy the flight, but they also enjoyed the water cannon salute the plane received when it arrived.

"It was great. It was a perfect flight and a perfect landing, very nice flight. And the trucks waiting, squirting us," Bill and MaryAnn said.

The connection runs through August 30th. Carpenter says if the route is profitable, it could be extended.

This is one of the 9 non–stops out of Rapid City.
