Summer Nights Kicks off and some are pleased with the changes

Summer Nights kicked off Thursday night, in a slightly new location than last year. For the most part people say they are pleased with the changes.
Summer Nights now uses Seventh and Main street, instead of Saint Joseph Street, like last year. The stage sits at the corner of Seventh and Main. Organizers say the new set-up flows better to Main Street square and leaves part of the 700 block open.
"We think this is the best footprint we've had and I think we always want to acknowledge that it does inconvenience the business owners to some degree. We are trying to minimize that. We've set up later than we have in the past. We are trying to make sure we stay out of their way as much as possible," said Sandy Schwan, Executive Director of Summer Nights.

Some business owners say the closure of part of the streets doesn't only back up traffic but it affects their bottom line. Other store owners say Summer Nights is great for business. And those attending say they enjoy the event.
"Our summer last year every Thursday night was great for us we saw an increase in business obviously thursdays, we saw the overflow Friday, Saturdays. People that normally don't come downtown came down on Thursday nights. So it was definitely beneficial for our business," said Jennifer Nielsen, Untamed Owner.
"We just moved to Rapid City and I think this is a wonderful event," said Kathleen Thurman.
Summer Nights will be every Thursday throughout the summer and it will end August 28.
