UPDATE - One dead in Rapid City officer involved shooting

Rapid City Police Press Release
At approximately 11:30 p.m. on June 4, a Rapid City police officer conducted a vehicle stop on an ATV in the area of West Main and Sheridan Lake Road.  The ATV stopped in the parking lot of the Clock Tower Gardens Apartments at 614 Sheridan Lake Road.

The suspect attempted to run from the stop. A second officer on scene pursued the suspect a short distance before tackling the suspect. The suspect began firing multiple rounds from a handgun. The officer and the suspect were engaged in a struggle over the suspect’s weapon, as the suspect fired.  The first officer fired his service weapon to stop the suspect, striking him at least one time.

The suspect has been identified as Harold Murphy, age 35 of Rapid City. Murphy died at the scene.  The Rapid City police officers were not injured.

Murphy has a violent criminal history and several past contacts with law enforcement, including arrests for aggravated assault, DUI, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.  He also had an active warrant for failure to comply with a sentence.

The officer involved in the shooting is Officer Jerrell Lewellen.  Officer Lewellen has been a Rapid City police officer for more than two years.

As is standard practice, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.  Officers were also assisted on scene by the South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.

Additional information on the shooting will be released following the conclusion of the investigation by DCI.
