Tea Party, Howie will continue conservative campaign

A rolling crowd of 75 people attended the Rapid City area's Tea Party primary election review Tuesday night, calling it a Conservative Unity Celebration.

Keynote speakers included Republican gubernatorial candidate Lora Hubbel, local organizer Gordon Howie and U.S. Senate candidate Stace Nelson via cell phone.

The mood was somber but far from defeatist even though most candidates backed by the Tea Party did not win in Tuesday's elections.

The Tea Party campaign will continue, however. Howie confirmed he would now challenge Republican nominee Mike Rounds, Democrat Rick Weiland and Independent Larry Pressler in the general election. Individually and collectively, he said they lean toward liberal political policies compared to his conservative stance.

"I'm offering South Dakota a much different vision in this race for the U.S. Senate. In the coming months a message of faith and freedom and purpose will be heard again across this state, and voters will get a chance to decide between two clear and very different paths."

Lora Hubbel of Sioux Falls came to Rapid City to thank her Black Hills regional supporters and to encourage all citizens to question government leaders and their actions .

"It's OK to say what's going on here? It's OK to challenge. It's OK to say I don't agree with this and I'm going to choose a different path. It's OK to do that even if you are afraid, even if your voice quakes, even if your knees rattle. Do it anyway. Challenge people when they need to be challenged."

Stace Nelson told the crowd that the West River area was a crucial part of his reason for entering the race and urged the Tea Party supporters to continue the fight against spendy government policies.
