Workforce summit in Rapid City aims to recruit workers

By Barrett Phillips

More than 200 businessmen and women gathered for a workforce summit Tuesday in Rapid City to get some insight on how to recruit applicants for open jobs.

South Dakota has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation at 3.8 percent.
As a result, local business leaders are having a hard time filling open positions with locals. They are trying to pull workers in from out-of-state.

Marcia Hultman, SD Secretary of the Department of Labor and Regulation, said the key is for local business leaders to speak up.

"Hopefully it means to local individuals that their given the opportunity to be heard. That's really the most important aspect in what we hope to gain from the summits held across the state," said Hultman.

There are several workforce summits planned across the state, including in Watertown, Brookings, Sioux Falls, and Aberdeen.
