Baby camel born on Rapid City ranch

By Barrett Phillips

The first baby camel of the year was born Monday June 2nd at Lippert's Miniature Longhorn Ranch near Rapid City.

Lorin Lippert buys, sells and breeds camels on his ranch for zoo markets.

The baby and the mother faired great through the birthing process which lasted about 30 minutes. Lippert said the camel is average size, weighing 75 pounds.

Lippert said the camels, which come from Texas, actually fair pretty well in South Dakota's climate.

"A lot of people have the misconception that they are not able to live here in South Dakota. We had the storm in October; we actually lost cows, regular beef cattle, and the camels did just fine," said Lippert.
According to Lippert, the camels do not take any more acreage than cattle.
