Zion Lutheran Church celebrates 100th anniversary

A big party for a big a milestone!

The congregation at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City is celebrating 100 years of serving the Black Hills community this month.

The congregation was formerly organized about 100 years ago. But the church traces its roots back to the 1880’s.

Senior pastor David Schwan said when the church started, fewer than 50 members would meet once a month. Since then, the congregation has grown to about 1,200 members.

"We’re very thankful to God that he has blessed this congregation with a lot of great people who are very dedicated in the service of the lord," Schwan said.

Bob Herz, former principle of the Lutheran School, said although the method of getting the church's message out has changed over the years, the actual message remains the same.

"I think our role hasn't changed. We want to preach the word of God. And not just to ours, but to the people around us, to people who don't know about God and what he has done for us," Herz said.

Organizers say the church plans to have on–going festivities through next year.
