The Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon kicks off Sunday. And it's the races biggest year ever.
On Saturday, runners checked in and picked up their race packets. About 3,000 runners will take to the course, either running the full marathon, half marathon, or the relay.
Organizers cap the race and this year it was filled a month earlier than any other year.
"I think word is catching on how beautiful the course. And the race is well organized. We have the best volunteers of any race I've ever done. So I think word is just getting out," said Emily Wheeler, Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon Race Director.
Of the 3,000 runners close to 500 will run the full marathon, 26.2 miles.
Those who ran the full marathon last year and are signed up to do it again, say the course is spectacular.
"Last year I met a guy from New Zealand and his wife lets him run one marathon out of his country. And this is the one he picked last year so that tells you how special the Deadwood Mickelson Marathon is," said Jesse Herman.
This year, runners from 47 different states are represented. Runners also came from different countries, including Canada and Germany.
