Rapid City interim police chief confident in the road ahead

The retirement of a KOTA Territory police chief has many wondering who will be next to inherit the reins of the department.

With Steve Allender stepping down Thursday after 30 years with the Rapid City Police Department, the duties of chief now fall on the shoulders of Assistant Chief Karl Jegeris, at least on an interim basis.

The 18 year veteran of the Rapid City police force was named second in command by Mayor Sam Kooiker in 2012.

Interim Chief Jegeris says that he doesn't plan on making any major changes while the department is in this transitional period, and believes that Allender's leadership has set the stage for him.

"He was an exceptional leader and was a great mentor to me and he allowed me to be involved in a lot of the major incidents over the last several years and so, I am very confident that I'm in a position that I'm prepared to deal with whatever situations come our way", said Jegeris.

He is also one of 26 applicants who have applied to be the next chief of police in Rapid City.
