Children First: feed kids plenty of fruits and veggies during summer months

Besides no school, summer is a time for sweet treats, cool fruit flavored beverages, and plenty of fried yummy foods. But those things should be eaten in moderation - especially by kids.
In the summer months kids exhaust a lot of energy, and experts say it is important to replenish their bodies with fresh fruits and vegetables.

Registered dietician Patty Cresalia suggests parents spend time with kids showing them how to eat healthy. Cresalia says kids should have plenty of water and other healthy liquids. "I think kids should remember to drink healthy things, drinking water during the summer when they're out running and playing is probably the very best beverage that they can have," said Cresalia.
Cresalia says parents should make sure their children have breakfast and keep with a routine during the summer.

Youth and Family Services will be serving free meals this summer, Monday through Friday for all children under 18. June 2 through August 15 they will be serving breakfast from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at 410 E. Monroe St. (off of Lacrosse St.). And from June 2 through August 21 lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Mother Butler Center at 231 Knollwood Drive.
