Search for new Rapid City police chief continues

Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender put on his badge for the last time Thursday. He's retiring after 29 years of service in Rapid City. Assistant Chief Karl Jegeris will now lead the Department until Mayor Sam Kooiker officially names a chief.

The Mayor says he is trying out a new process to select Rapid City's next chief.  He says he has formed a panel made up of police, citizens and civic leaders to help in the selection process. According to the Mayor, that decision could be tough. He says there are several very qualified applicants.
Some are local, others are not.  "We had 26 applicants and we had excellent applicants for the position," Mayor Kooiker said. "We're in the process of doing interviews and I hope to have a name to bring forward this summer," He continued.
Once the Mayor decides on his pick for Chief, he'll bring it in front of the city council.
