Warmer weather invigorates holiday activities

Weather conditions can make or break weekend plans.
Although earlier forecasts were not too rosy, a nod from Mother Nature encouraged numerous local residents to quick-hit stores for flower and vegetable garden plants, and necessities for impromptu picnic and camping outings over the Memorial Day weekend.
"I've got some relatives coming in from Sioux Falls, so we are going to eat tonight: Chicken, and make some sloppy joes, corn on the cob, and all kinds of snacks," said Monica Leitheiser of Rapid City.
Owner Don Turner said his Don's Valley Market customers started their holiday shopping as early as Thursday, but most said they had no travel or event plans because of the shaky weather outlook.
Then the sun shined and the temperatures rose.
"You know, we've had a long, cold winter and this is the first nice weather we've had and they've made a change of plans and decided to go up into the Hills and do some camping. It's been very, very busy. We even had a major run on firewood. My firewood supplier just left. We're filled and ready to rock again," he said Saturday.
Turner says his patrons have been traditional holiday shoppers, packing away hotdogs, watermelons, chips, pop and "tons" of lean hamburger he's offering as a holiday discount.
