Rapid City DUI patrol; Memorial Day weekend

The DUI guys are out in full force.

Drinking and driving is a problem all year, but with warmer weather, more people are out and about. Rapid City police were out on saturation patrol this weekend, and KOTA Reporter Alexandra Montgomery went on a ride-along. "We're going to be doing some traffic stops tonight, making sure people are sober and wearing their seat belts," said Officer Kyle Theisen, Rapid City Police.

Theisen was one of three officers patrolling the streets looking for drunk drivers. "We're bringing on one extra officer for the saturation tonight just to try and get that many more stops in," said Theisen.  Stops that are made if an officer sees a driver making drunken mistakes. "They're going to be swerving all over the road they could be bouncing off the curb," said Theisen. "If we're in a 35 mph zone and they're going 20 mph, not too many people do that."

And if you fail Theisen's impairment tests and/or blow above the legal limit (0.08%), it's off to jail. Theisen was involved in three arrests while Montgomery was with him from 11:00 p.m. Saturday till around 3:00 a.m. Sunday. Ten DUI arrests were made Friday, and by the end of the holiday weekend, Theisen says he wouldn't be surprised to see thirty DUI arrests.

If you don't want to be one of those people arrested, it's pretty simple. "If I could give advice to the public, it's not to drink and drive," said Theisen. Otherwise, one of the DUI guys will find you on the road. "A lot of people think 'I make those four left turns you can't follow me anymore,' but that's not true," said Theisen.

In 2013, 892 DUI arrests were made.
