People say new sign on Mt. Rushmore Road is more clear

Improvements will soon be happening at the railroad crossing on Mount Rushmore Road in Rapid City. This is separate from the Mount Rushmore Road construction project. There were some signs put up early this week that made some people think the entire road would be closed.

The new and some say a more clear sign that was put up by DOT, alerting people that part of Mount Rushmore Road, between Omaha and Main street, will be closed and traffic will be detoured.

Mike Quasney, of the Mount Rushmore Road Group, says the original sign made it seem like the entire road would be closed. The group contacted DOT and the sign was changed the next day.

The project engineer says the sign is now more clear. He says message boards it can be hard, because there isn't a lot of room to fit detail. Business owners say they want customers to realize they are open for business and so is Mount Rushmore Road.

"Now the signs are a little more clear. It actually states that it is at the railroad crossing where the road is closed. Not all of Highway 16. So yes, businesses are still up and they are still going and we want everyone to use Highway 16 and come visit us," said Quasney.
The construction at the railroad crossing is scheduled to begin June 2nd and be done by July 9th.
