Children First: Kids learn life-saving skills

Does your child know how to dial 911? Are they able to do CPR? Are they comfortable interacting with emergency responders?
EMTs and local law enforcement are teaming up to teach kids how to handle emergency situations.

In honor of EMS Week (May 18-24), kids were given the chance to interact with emergency responders, like LifeFlight doctors, at the Sturgis Fire Hall Monday. The idea was to get kids more comfortable with the local heroes who respond to emergencies. "It's not necessarily a scary situation, if they're scared going into that, it's going to make what's going on twice as bad," said Shawn Fischer, Sturgis ambulance director.

Kids met the experts, who are so important in first-response care, but they also learned how they can help. "Our main thing is to make kids understand the importance of prevention," said Fischer.  Like what can happen to you if your car rolls over when you aren't wearing a seatbelt. Deputies with the Sturgis Sheriff's Office brought a simulation rollover car. "I
t was a little scary," said Addison Long, a third-grader at Sturgis Elementary School.  "It taught us we always need to wear our seat belts in vehicles."

Long, and her fellow students, also practiced calling 911. "If there's a lock on it,
you've got to press emergency call and a keypad will come up and you press 911," said Long.  Along with learning how to do compression CPR. "You gotta put your hands in a certain position and push on their chest," said Long. All of these lessons were to give kids the ability to perform basic life-saving skills. "A lot of times a child is the only one there when an adult collapses, so there is something they can do," said Fischer.

Thursday, several ambulance and law enforcement agencies will play each other in a softball game as part of EMS Week. The public is invited to attend as a way to meet your first responders. Click here for a list of events:
