Rapid City Fire Department promotes annual "Fill the Boot" fundraiser

By Barrett Phillips

The Rapid City Fire Department's eighth annual "Fill the Boot" event begins Wednesday, raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Firefighters are taking time out of their day to set fire boots in stores. The boots act as donation jars.

Boots will be placed in both Walmarts, the Family Thrift on the Eastside of town, the Safeway on the Westside of town, Bacon Park, and Rushmore Crossing.

Lt. Bent Long said he hopes the donations can stretch as far as they did last year.  The event raised $46,000.

"If we can help find a cure for this through research, or if we can help families out with things that they need just for day to day living. Maybe even send a kid to summer camp this year where they can actually go and feel like a kid," said Long.

The Rapid City Fire Women's Auxiliary started off the drive with a big donation of $250.

More than 500 South Dakota families are affected by a neuromuscular disease.
