Vandals tag a Rapid City park with a racial epithet

Vandals tag a Rapid City park with a racial epithet. Someone wrote the "N" word on a bench at one man's favorite fishing spot at Canyon Lake Park.
He shares his story exclusively with KOTA Territory News.

Our reporter, David Johnson, found out about the incident last Thursday when the gentleman sent him a personal text message and a picture of what was written.
The man asked to remain anonymous. We will refer to him as “Joe.”

"Joe" says he goes to Canyon Lake Park and fishes at the same spot several times each week. He says he likes the spot because he usually catches a lot of fish there. But last week when he arrived, he noticed the "N" word written on the bench where he sits when he's fishing.  He says he does not know who wrote it, but thinks he was the target.

"It was quite shocking. I almost packed my stuff and just said, “No, I won't fish here.” Joe continued, "But when I thought to myself that's probably the intention of whoever wrote it, I figured I'd stay."   He also said he is relieved his 3-years-old son did not see it.

The slur has been removed.  The Rapid City Parks and Recreation Department has had trouble at another location.  Racial graffiti mar other park facilities.  They are in the process of removing these racial insults.
