Spearfish's Golgotha to get Jesus of Nazareth monument

The Spearfish Hill locals call Golgotha could be a site for a new monument in the Black Hills. The hill where Christ's crucifixion was dramatized in the Black Hills Passion Play from 1939 through 2008 is the proposed site for a Jesus of Nazareth statue. Organizers say their project will encourage visitors to reflect on the biblical question "Who do you say that I am?".

The board of directors of the non profit behind the proposed project say they are looking for artists and their own renditions on this vision.
As far as the amphitheater now known as the "Look Out Amphitheater" where the passion plays were performed, it is still closed. Owner Rand Williams says they want to begin having events there for visitors once again. He says he hopes the monument and the amphitheater can go in conjunction with one another.

The projected cost of the project is unknown, as well as the size of the statue.
