Free weekend at Custer State Park - KOTA Territory News

Free weekend at Custer State Park

The threat of rain didn't keep people from enjoying a free weekend at Custer State Park.

The park has been offering free admission since Friday. More than three dozen activities are lined up, including wall climbing and firefighting games.

Visitor services coordinator Craig Pugsley said he expects a big crowd to come out.

"Typically, we get between 10,000 and 12,000 people to visit during the weekend. It's really an opportunity for us to showcase Custer State Park to the local people. They can come in and see what's new and what's happening and hopefully become year long patrons of the park."

"My kids live in Rapid City. I came out for a late mother's day party and my daughter birthday celebration. It's kind of a tradition for us to come on the free day," said Janet Bjordahl, who was visiting the park with her family.

The open house ends on Sunday with the popular buffalo chip flip. If you're thinking about camping at Custer this year, you'd better make your reservations soon. Pugsley said camping reservations are already ahead of last year.
