Rapid City man to make initial court appearance on murder charges

A man accused of committing Rapid City's first murder of the year will make his first court appearance Tuesday morning.
 
Daryl Espinoza, 28, of Rapid City was arrested Friday. He's charged with aggravated assault and second degree murder.
 
Witnesses say Espinoza and 59-year-old Lars Greeley were drinking at this apartment complex with several other people when Espinoza assaulted Greeley.

Police say Espinoza also assaulted a second male that tried to stop the beating.

A preliminary autopsy shows that Greeley died from blunt force trauma.
 
No one else has been arrested.

Daryl Espinoza, age 28 of RC, was arrested Friday night in the murder of a Rapid City man found dead in an apartment complex.

A resident at 603 Quincy discovered Lars Greeley, age 59, lying in a common area shortly after 5 a.m. on May 16 and called police. Greeley was dead when police arrived.

Preliminary autopsy results revealed Greeley's cause of death as blunt force trauma. According to witnesses, Espinoza and Greeley were drinking in an apartment with several other people when Espinoza assaulted Greeley. Espinoza also assaulted a second male that tried to stop the beating.

Espinoza was arrested for aggravated assault and second degree murder. The investigation is continuing. This is all according to Rapid City Police.

The Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of a Rapid City man found in an apartment complex early Friday morning.

Someone living at 603 Quincy discovered the man lying in a common area shortly after 5 a.m. and called police. The man was dead when police arrived.
Detectives are investigating the death as suspicious. The cause of death is still unknown, pending the results of an autopsy.

The man’s identity is not being released at this time, pending notification of his family. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
