Middle school students pay tribute to veterans

A Rapid City middle school is paying tribute to some very special heroes.

In celebration of National Military Appreciation Month, students from St. Thomas More Middle School organized a flag ceremony Thursday honoring veterans, soldiers and their families.

The event also provided an opportunity to celebrate the school collecting more than $20,000 worth of items for veterans as part of the state wide Holiday Relief Drive “Buddy Baskets” campaign.
Event organizer and reigning Miss Siouxland Ashley Simunek says that making a connection between youth and veterans is one of the keys to recognizing the sacrifice of those who came before them.

"For the next generation, the thing they can do the most is make sure that out military members are honored and remembered and they can do that by saying thank you", Simunek said.

A new flag and flag pole were also presented to the middle school for having raised the most items in the state.
