Spearfish School Board approves sanctioned soccer for 2014-2015 school year

Sanctioned soccer will be coming to Spearfish sooner than expected. The Spearfish School Board initially approved sanctioned soccer for the 2015 to 2016 school year.

But after many requests and a petition with hundreds of signatures to change the date to the 2014 to 2015 school year, the school board listened. Blake Bacon is a Senior at Spearfish High School and he played soccer all throughout his high school career. It was not a school sponsored sport when he played.

In an unanimous vote on Monday, the school board voted to move up the sanctioned soccer date to the 2014 to 2015 school year.

"I think it's important because it is not only a city sport. It is a school sport. And I think that gives a lot more kids the opportunity to go out for it," said Bacon.

Spearfish High School Boy's Varsity Soccer Coach, Jim Hill, says this is long over due.

"We have been trying to be sanctioned for 17 years."

Hill says this is an important move for the players.

"Just at our sports banquet we had a young lady who was going to be are class valedictorian and because it was non sanctioned she didn't receive a pin for a grade point average of higher than a 3.65," said Hill.

Players won't have to pay to play anymore.

"There is no longer the ability to charge the players to play. We will be charging gate receipts when people come to the gate to watch games. There will be that opportunity to make up some of that money," said Hill.

Bacon says this will give the team a little more of an edge.

"I think it will be a little more competitive because you are playing for your school and not just for your club," said Bacon.

Spearfish Youth Soccer Association guaranteed a $44,000 payment to the school district over the next five years in support of the district's move to sanction soccer. Sanctioned soccer was recently approved for Central and Stevens High School in Rapid City.
