Beef lovers "crawl" through downtown Rapid City

Where’s the beef?

That’s what food lover’s were asking when they joined ranchers for the 2nd annual "Beef Crawl" in downtown Rapid City Monday night.

The event, supported by AG United for South Dakota, gave “foodies" the chance to sample delicious beef dishes at some of Rapid City's top restaurants. It also gave diners the opportunity to meet with ranchers and ask questions.

Ron Frederick, executive director for the South Dakota Beef Industry Council, said last October’s blizzard was devastating for South Dakota ranchers.

"They estimate the lose at somewhere around 60,000 to 65,000 a head range. And about 60% of those were beef cows. So that has a devastating effect on where we're at today. And because it takes so long to replace those beef cows in the herd, it's going to be devastating for years to come," Frederick said.

Ranchers also talked about food safety. Todd Mortenson says at his family–owned business, they do it the right way.

"We want to be in business a long time down the road. So we're going to do it right. We’re going to make sure it's sustainable. We’re going to make sure it's environmentally friendly," Mortenson said.

The group of over 50 started with appetizers at Botticelli Ristorante on Main Street, made their way to Delmonico Grill for the main entrée, and ended the evening with dessert at the Alex Johnson Hotel
