Sturgis' population is budding; developing land to accommodate

Posted:

Sturgis is developing land to create homes for its budding population.

Christina Steele, Sturgis planning and zoning coordinator, says land along Elk Road is in the process of being bought from SD Game, Fish, and Parks. The city is currently paying off a $608,000 bill for just more than 60 acres. Steele says the vacancy rate in Sturgis .7%, while nationally it's 3%. The land off Elk Road will be developed in around five years or so, for both housing and recreation.

Steele says other city owned properties will also eventually be developed. She attributes the increase in population to the creation of new jobs in the area.
