Hazardous waste drop-off helps cleanup Rapid City

 By Barrett Phillips

Hazardous material that can't be disposed of at a regular dump, got an environmentally friendly home Saturday.

A hazardous materials dump was set up at the Fairgrounds in Rapid City. Rapid City officials spent $25,000 to hire 'Veolia' to come and clean up the area Saturday.

People who didn't have a place to store or dispose of materials like oil, gas, and mercury came to the dump. The company will send the waste to Blaine, Minnesota for incineration.

This is the first year the city has done this, and Ferlen says she is glad to see people care about disposing safely. "It means that we want to take care of our land, and then take care of our air quality, our land quality. We are aware of things that need to be done and we're moving forward," said Ferlen.

She added they hoped to receive 600 to 800 vehicles worth of waste.
