SDSM&T students practice mining games

It's not your normal college PowerPoint presentation.  Friday, engineering students at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology did a few hands-on demonstrations.

Members of the Mining and Mucking team showed their commencement speaker, Glenn Kellow, President and CEO of Peabody Energy, a few of their mining games. One of the games called the 'hand steel' consisted of five members drilling into a concrete block with chisel like steels and a hammer.

Mining safety is critical for Mines students and they take precautions during the games. Kellow's company is a leader in the nation for mining safety, which is why he was an easy choice to speak at Saturday's graduation.

Commencement is Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Ice Arena.
