Citizen Campus opens at Rapid City Landfill

Visits to the landfill just got a little easier and greener for the citizens of Rapid City.
The Solid Waste Division officially opened the $4.2 million Rapid City Landfill Citizen Campus Wednesday.
The one– stop convenience center, features a 24– hour recycling and yard waste drop–off, and new scale facilities.

Rapid City Solid Waste Superintendent Karl Merbach said that one of the project goals was to be as green as possible by using recycled materials.

"The boiler that's located in our education center is a dual gas. We can use that that methane gas from the landfill to run that boiler to heat this building, our maintenance shops and other building in the campus area," Merbach said.

The facility was originally scheduled to be completed last October, but the inclement weather slowed construction.
