Penn. Co. reports meth arrests up 234%

Drug related crimes are on the rise in Pennington County. That's according to a new report released today by the Pennington County Sheriff's Department.

In the annual report, drug arrests for methamphetamine increased by 234% in 2013.

Chief Deputy Willie Whelchel said the department is working towards lowering that number.

"We're constantly educating our law enforcement personnel on what to look for, you know, the signs and the information out there on it. We obviously have some specialized units that work in that area, that deals just with illegal drug use," Whelchel said.

The report also shows that major crimes are also on the rise.

The number of aggravated assaults increased 26%. The number of rapes reported increased by almost 15%. However, robberies and burglaries are down 55% and 12% respectively.

This is the first year the Pennington County Sheriff's Department has issued such a report.
