Pennington County receives federal money for October storm damage

Posted:
The October blizzard cost Pennington County hundreds of thousands of dollars. The emergency management department spent more than $200,000 on the storm. Pennington County was recently reimbursed from the federal government and state government.

On Tuesday, County Commissions approved where the reimbursed money will go. They received more than $240,000. Commissioners decided to give the money back that Emergency Management spent. The leftover money will go to the drainage reserve fund.
Dustin Willett, Director of Emergency Management for Pennington County and Rapid City, says disasters are expensive in many ways and there is always a bottom line where people are writing a check for disaster response.

"At some point we have to pay the piper on what it costs to respond to a disaster and the reimbursement that we received from the federal government and state government certainly helped offset that unplanned expenditure," said Willett.

The October blizzard cost Pennington County more than $550,000.
