How Rapid City can help prevent wildfires; Wildfire Awareness Week

'Only you can prevent wildfires.'

That's a phrase we're all familiar with, but multiple fire response teams are reminding people this week about their role in preventing fires.

In Main Street Square Sunday afternoon, the members of various agencies, like Wildland Fire Suppression, lined up to let kids try on firefighter gear and to climb into trucks. Kids also got pictures with the famous Smokey Bear.

Andrew Tate, event co-coordinator, says while the kids are having fun, parents and other adults are learning about ways they can prevent wildfires. He says firefighters need the community's help to stop fires before they even start."Doing simple home maintenance steps that they're probably already doing," said Tate. "Cleaning needles off their decks and gutters, not storing firewood underneath decks, and it goes as far as thinning trees and replacing siding materials, decking materials, and ultimately roofing, if that's something they decide they want to do."

Events like this will be going on all week to educate people on ways they can help prevent wildfires.
