Hundreds participate in annual Wellspring Stampede in Rapid City

By Barrett Phillips

The Wellspring Stampede was held Sunday morning at Canyon Lake park. This years theme was the Kentucky Derby. Over 400 participants signed up for this year's event.

People wore fancy hats and even spray painted race numbers on their dogs.

Jessica Olsen, Executive Director of Wellspring, said participants could choose between a 10k run and 5k run or walk.

Proceeds from the stampede go to help the children of Wellspring.

"A lot of our kids actually came out today to help in one way or another, so they like to be involved. It lets them know all these people are here to support that, and that's the wonderful thing about a race like today," said Olsen.

Wellspring is an organization that serves youth between the ages of 10 and 17 who have significant mental health, substance abuse, and behavioral challenges.
