SD Democrats call out Mike Rounds over political ad; Obamacare and Medicare

Members of the South Dakota Democratic Party are calling out Mike Rounds, former governor and U.S. Senate hopeful, over a recently released political ad.

In the ad, Rounds says: “President Barrack Obama is cutting over $700 billion from Medicare to fund Obamacare." This statement has infuriated Zach Crago, executive director of the South Dakota Democratic Party. “This is an often repeated claim by Republican candidates for federal office, who are trying to scare seniors,” said Crago.

Crago says Rounds inaccurately says $700 billion are being taken from Medicare. “When in fact, $700 billion are being directed away from ‘Medicare Advantage,’ which is a private program that pays private insurance companies a high reimbursement rate, often for the same service,” said Crago.

Rounds says he stands by his campaign video. “If people have a problems with ‘I’m saying Medicare,’ it’s very simple, Medicare Advantage is part of Medicare,” said Rounds.

According to Rounds, Obamacare will negatively affect the 30% of Americans who choose those private plans. “The way that they reduce Medicare Advantage is they leave less dollars that are available for procedures,” said Rounds.  “Fewer doctors will accept clients based upon a reduced amount of money available to them.”

He also says the billions of dollars are being taken from the program and placed elsewhere. “The Board of Trustees has once again projected that it will go broke by the year 2026,” said Rounds, about the Medicare trust fund.

But Crago says the money will help the Medicare program as a whole. “You can read reports yourself, the AFA (Affordable Health Act) has actually extended the life of the Medicare trust fund,” said Crago.
KOTA Territory News called Politi-Fact, a political ad fact-checking website. According to Angie Drobnic Holan, editor, Rounds’ statement: “President Barrack Obama is cutting over $700 billion from Medicare to fund Obamacare,” has an element of truth, but it is not a complete representation of the facts.
