SD lawmaker calls homosexuality a health issue

A South Dakota representative is attracting nationwide media attention for a recent controversial Facebook post, where he called on the medical community to be honest about the dangers of gay sex.

Representative Steve Hickey of Sioux Falls sent a letter to the Argus Leader newspaper, then posted it to his Facebook page. In it, he refers to gay sex as a 'one way alley meant only for the garbage truck to go down'. He asks the medical and psychological community to weigh in publicly and timely on the matter of homosexuality and the human body, psyche and family.

Rapid City Doctor Kevin Weiland fired back Friday, saying his letter encourages hate. "I'm saddened and a little outraged that he would ask us to classify homosexuality as a disease," Weiland said.   "It is not nor has it ever been a disease," Weiland continued.

Hickey told the Associated Press that he's received comments and threats since posting his thoughts earlier this week. He believes people are tired of hearing the religious argument against homosexuality and wants medical professionals to come forward to explain the health risks of homosexual activity.
