Sturgis distillery wins award for moonshine

Posted:
South Dakota's first legal distillery is receiving national attention for the quality of its product.
Black Hills Dakota Distillery in Sturgis recently won a silver medal at the American Craft Distillers Association Convention in Denver for its "Sturgis Shine" moonshine.
Brothers Michael and Paul lewis created their recipe for the 100 proof spirit using sugar, and locally grown barley from Belle Fourche and honey from Hermosa.
With just 10 months in business, Co-owner Paul Lewis says the brothers faced a steep learning curve about the distillation process, but the silver medal award confirms they are on the right track, "It's a real honor because basically it gets the recognition by our peers that our efforts have paid off. Out of 500 distillers we've been able to be recognized as a silver medal product, so it's very gratifying".
With the success of "Sturgis Shine", Lewis says the distillery plans on adding flavored offerings in the future.
