Federal panel puts Edgemont uranium mine on hold

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) _ The operating license for a proposed uranium mine near Edgemont has been temporarily put on hold.
The federal Atomic Safety and Licensing Board issued a stay Wednesday on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission license granted to Powertech Uranium Corp.
The decision is in response to the Oglala Sioux Tribe's argument that the project would disturb cultural and historic sites.
The board that issued the stay says it will decide whether to lift or continue it after hearing oral arguments. That hearing has not been scheduled.
Powertech's project manager says the stay is not a surprise and doesn't affect the operation because the company needs other agency approval before starting construction.
One of the tribe's attorneys says a credible scientific study must be done to ensure historic sites won't be damaged.
